The history of Château Pesquié is one of a family who believed very early on in the tremendous potential of the Ventoux. Since 2003, Alexandre & Frédéric have taken up the torch and now continue the family adventure with the same concern for expressing the terroir of the Ventoux. Today it is one of the flagship estates of the Appellation and of the southern Rhône Valley and the new generation intends to keep up the "sacred fire". The terroir of Château Pesquié is first of all one of the coolest microclimates in the southern Rhône Valley. It is then a great mineral diversity with predominantly limestone soils. The Mont Ventoux indeed creates exceptional conditions for the elaboration of great wines. A very favorable microclimate: At the crossroads between the Alpine and Mediterranean worlds, the vineyard of Château Pesquié enjoys an exceptional microclimate. The estate is located at the crossroads of three communes: Mormoiron, Blauvac and Ville-sur-Auzon. The southern slope of Mont Ventoux enjoys a very large amount of sunshine (on average nearly 8 hours of sunshine per day over the year and up to 12 hours per day in July). These optimal sanitary conditions for the vines are reinforced by the frequent Mistral wind, the north wind which almost systematically dries up the rare rains. Above all, the average altitude of the estate between 300 and 400 m as well as the strong variations in temperature between days and nights allow excellent physiological balances for the vines and reinforce color, concentration, freshness and balance in the wine. During the summer nights, the warm air rises towards the summit of the Ventoux while the cool air descends from its peaks. Château Pesquié is thus located in the later part of one of the highest and latest terroirs of the southern Rhône Valley: this is the guarantee of great finesse and elegance for the wines of the estate. Mineral richness and diversity of grape varieties: The vineyard of Château Pesquié sits on gravelly clay-limestone hillsides. The soils are of a great diversity with a dominant limestone (Urgonian) but also different types of clay and some sands bringing a great complexity in the wines. The characteristics of the Ventoux area are thus extremely varied and the Mormoiron area is one of the richest in the Vaucluse geologically. The vines are essentially planted on Quaternary era soils which have however inherited the mineral richness of the Cretaceous soils. The young soils are therefore next to the oldest ones, like the colluviums, resulting from the repeated action of freezing and thawing, located at the foot of the Cretaceous hills. The ochres and clays with warm colors often contrast with the whiteness of the limestones and offer a striking richness of landscape. Château Pesquié works with a dozen grape varieties and the complexity of its wines also owes much to the blending, a great tradition of the southern Rhone Valley. If the vineyard of Château Pesquié is located very south of the Rhone Valley, the altitude and freshness of the Ventoux also give the terroir northern characteristics. The two main grape varieties in the vineyard are Grenache, king of the Southern Rhône (with almost 40% of the surface area) and Syrah, king of the Northern Rhône (with more than 30% of the vines). The other grape varieties cultivated are mainly Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, Viognier, Clairette, Chardonnay, etc...
